Cheered on by a crowd of 652 that was bolstered by a huge turn out in force by Buckley Town Junior players, coaches and parents at every age group from U6s to U16s Buckley Town secured three points in this keenly contested Flintshire derby on what was a great fun day for the club. It was great to see all age groups represented and showed just how strong this community-based football club has become in recent years.
Buckley opened the scoring when Aron Williams lobbed the Flint keeper Aaron Jones with a neat finish that put them in control of the game early on, something they never really looked like losing.
Flint had much of the play but created little in the first half other than one shot that was dealt with expertly by Buckley skipper Joe Makaruk.
Buckley switched formation to their normal 4-3-3 for the second half which helped them to become much more of a force in the game giving Aron Williams more scope to raid down the right flank.
Buckley had two great chances to add to the score from headers at the far post when first Luke Blizard was denied by keepers’ feet and the post and then Callum Humphries saw his attempt bounce off the cross bar and away.
The change at half time allowed Buckley to better hit Flint on the break and it was from one such break out that Aron Williams was able to deliver a cross for Jake Roberts, who had steamed in at the back post, to finish with a volley that gave the Flint keeper no chance.
Flint did not show enough urgency to get themselves back into the game, with only one real clear-cut chance in the second period that was again brilliantly saved by keeper Joe Makaruk. Buckley’s centre back pairing of Callum Humphries and Chris Roberts dealt with most that came their way and it was not until very late on that Flint managed to pull one back when they were gifted a penalty when Ged Kinsella was fouled in the box and Richie Foulkes scored from the spot. Flint only then upped their tempo but Buckley simply got the ball up field and into the corners where they held it to close out the game.
Buckley Manager Dan Moore spoke to The Leader after the game and said, “We’ve conceded late on in games this season, but we dealt with Flint scoring two minutes from time really well.”
“We managed to run the clock down and see the game out without too many problems, which was pleasing after playing pretty well throughout the 90 minutes.”
“The players know they are safe, but they produced a good performance in what was a good derby game.”
On the Globe Way crowd, Moore added: “It was great to see so many people watching the team.
“We want to put the club into the community as much as possible and it was really good to get a win in-front of a good crowd.”
