Bangor vs Buckley Town

Recap

Well if you are going to be tested in your first game back in the Huws Gray Alliance, you may as well be tested by arguably the best team in the league.

Bangor City came second in the Welsh Premier League last season qualifying for a place in Europe only to then find that they had failed the leagues tier one domestic licence and UEFA licence for season 2018-2019. This meant instant demotion the Huws Gray Alliance and the club has been trying to rally ever since. We are talking about arguably the biggest club in the domestic structure here, one that has graced the top tier of Welsh football for many years. Let’s face it, they should not be in this position but they are where they are and we were delighted to have the opportunity to travel to Nantporth.

The match turned out to be the baptism of fire back in the Huws Gray Alliance that many thought it would be and Buckley found themselves three nil down after less than fifteen minutes through straight forward defensive lapses. Alex Darlington scoring their first on 5 minutes, Les Davies added a second on 10 and Tom field made it three on 15. Alex Darlington made it four five minutes before the break and all looked bleak.

The second half was much different. Buckley came out of the dressing rooms with a completely different attitude to the game and instead of being in awe of their opponents they took it to them. The first fifteen minutes was all Buckley and Shaun Tinsley, Aron Williams and Ryan Jones all had chances of scoring before a great move down Buckley’s right flank saw Aron Williams turn inside and out before delivering a great shot cross that keeper Chris Mullock could not hold, pushing it out to the  oncoming Kieron Moore. He fired in a powerful shot which was blocked again but pounced on the rebound to head the ball over the line and pull one back.

Buckley continued to raid the flanks but as the game drew on fatigue began to set in on the beautifully manicured Nantporth pitch and from a right sided corner Les Davies powered a header home to score a fifth.

On score line alone, you would think all would be doom and gloom but the team showed great spirit during the second half and there were many positives to take out of the game. They also showed great spirit after the game so much so you would have thought they had won the game. Their highly entertaining banter was rewarded by Bangor’s staff who sent them home with a few spirits of a different kind and for that we greatly appreciate their gesture.
