NATIONAL LEAGUE BOARD AGREE FORMAT FOR RETURN OF THE NATHANIEL MG CUP, JD CYMRU NORTH AND JD CYMRU SOUTH

Finally, it looks like we are about to get the go-ahead for a return to competitive football with today’s announcement that we can return to play.

The FAW released the following much-welcomed statement this morning.

“The Football Association of Wales is pleased to announce that the 2020/21 edition of the Nathaniel MG Cup will kick off this month, with the First Round of competition due to take place on the second weekend of December 2020.

Following confirmation of the JD Cymru North and South being designated ‘elite status’ by Sport Wales last week, the National League Board met on Monday 30 November to determine the format of all relevant competitions for the season.

The First Round will comprise 26 Tier 2 Men’s clubs, 13 clubs respectively from both the JD Cymru North and South based on the 2019/20 season rankings, who will be joined by the two wildcard entries (Cardiff City and Newport County) in the First Round.

Consequently, Carmarthen Town, Swansea University and Briton Ferry Llansawel from the JD Cymru South and Airbus UK Broughton, Prestatyn Town and Guilsfield from the JD Cymru North will receive byes into the Second Round alongside the remaining JD Cymru Premier clubs.

The draw for the First Round will be broadcast tomorrow evening (2 December 2020) with the games scheduled to be played on the weekend of 11/12 December.

The National League Board confirmed that both leagues would play a shortened 15-match season scheduled to start in 2021. Each club will play each other once, with the clubs scheduled to play eight home matches to be determined by a random draw.

In line with the FAW Pyramid Regulations, promotion and relegation will take place as normal.”

We will await tomorrow’s draw with baited breath to see who will be our first opponents of the 2020/21 season.
