Buckley Town continued their recent run of good form with an away win under the lights at Holywell Town’s Halkyn Road ground.
The game was a keenly contested Flintshire Derby that Buckley took the lead in very early on. Set plays are a Buckley strong point and you concede them at your peril around your 18-yard box. It was from one such long throw in from the right-side bye line that Jake Roberts opened the scoring. Roberts seems to have come into a rich vein of goal scoring form, at just the right time of the season for Buckley and he took his goal well after the ball fell at his feet, firing home from six yards out.
Sometimes you can score a little too early and that may have been the case here as Buckley seemed to sit back once they were ahead and allowed Holywell to come on to them. That made for a competitive game as Holywell tried to take the play to Buckley and they probably had the better of the bulk of the half without really creating anything clear cut that Buckley’s defence could not deal with. Buckley did finish the half in the ascendency though as they began to push Holywell back down the flanks.
The second half had two significant events. The first was a sending off, as Wellmen’s Steve Lewis got his marching orders for a second yellow card offence of diving. That was not helpful to the Holywell cause, as at the point it occurred, they had looked well able of getting themselves back into the game.
It was then compounded by the second, as it allowed Buckley to hit Holywell on the counter attack, most notably down the right flank. Aron Williams broke out and delivered the perfect low cross for Shaun Tinsley steaming in down the left to fire home from 12 yards giving Holywell’s keeper no chance.
Holywell tried as they might and given they were down to ten men kept Buckley’s defence busy for the rest of the game but they simply could not find a way past and as their legs tired were always open to further raids down the flanks.
So in summing up, a workman like (dogged, scruffy) performance by Buckley Town and another sign of their growing maturity and confidence, given that three points was the outcome. It was not pretty but who cares when three points is the outcome away from home against a side battling to stay in the division. Of the 315 in attendance, many were from Buckley and their contribution to the atmosphere did not go unnoticed. A resounding chorus of “Yellows, Yellows, Yellows” welcomed the side back to the main stand at the end of the game and we hope you will all be with us for the final games of the season as we look to climb the table.
