Week to remember

Last week was one to remember for sport in Buckley.

McDonald’s FAW Trust Community Football Awards

On Thursday night, at the McDonald’s FAW Trust Community Football Awards (North East), our Junior counterparts were presented with the Club of the Year Award, proudly represented by Chairman and Club Secretary, Kev Holden and Emma Iball.

Our Junior Chairman has been quick to recognise the overall efforts of all stakeholders of the club, ‘After winning this prestigious regional award, we are automatically given the chance to win the Club of the Year Award across the whole of Wales.

This is something we should all be proud of and is in recognition of all managers, coaches, parent reps and everybody who contributes to the club.  Well done!’

Under 19s Team

As part of our ongoing commitment to provide a pathway for our Junior players to move into senior football, this season has saw the implementation of an Under 19s boys team come into fruition.

We have successfully integrated the majority of last season’s Under 16s squad into our senior set up, a few of which have had experience of first team and reserve football already this season.

Sunday saw our Under 19s take part in their first competitive fixture, despite a 2-0 loss, this marks a huge step forward for our football club and the football community within Buckley.

Our first team manager, Dan Moore, had this to say, ‘having worked with our Under 16s of last season for a period last year, I knew that it would be vital to retain as many of them as possible, they’re a good group.

We’ve already seen a number of them play in our first and reserve teams this season and this is a trend we expect to continue, and hopefully we now have a big piece of the jigsaw in place for years to come.’

Buckley Cricket Club Success

Also on Sunday, our Cricket Club saw their Under 13s boys team lift the Welsh Cup.

Under 13s coach and former Buckley Town player, Rhys Jones, commented, ‘We played 5 knockout rounds before finals day on Sunday.  We beat Carmarthen in the semi final by ten wickets (they beat us in the finals last year so that was nice!), and then an immense performance saw us beat Newport in the final. Easily the best day and feeling of my life!’

From everyone at Buckley Town Football Club, we would like to congratulate our friends at Buckley Cricket Club on this achievement, and for their continued progress and success in providing a top class environment for young players from the area to enjoy their sport!’
