The margins are small at the top of the table and so it was in this top of the table clash between Buckley Town and Airbus UK Broughton.
It was a tight and tense affair throughout and neither side could say they truly dominated at any point in the game. Saying that Airbus probably had the best of the first half hour but Buckley came back strong as the half progressed.
Buckley’s best chances of the half came firstly, when Josh Jones picked up the ball 30 yards out and drove across the box letting loose from 25 yards. The ball was curling wide of the keeper’s right-hand post but Keiron Moore almost got on the end of it as he slid in at the six-yard line. The second also fell to Josh Jones who almost forced the ball over the line with a martial art flying kick but unfortunately the whole of the ball did not cross the whole of the line. The sides went in level at half time.
Again, Airbus probably shaded the earliest part of the second half but Buckley grew stronger as the game progressed. They nearly took the lead when Dylan Roberts sent his free kick from the half way line into the box for Callum Humphries to head down to his partner in defence Luke Blizard. He fired in his shot off the outside of his right boot only for it to thump against the post and away to safety (see video below).
Buckley were now in the ascendancy and they did manage to take the lead whilst they were on top on 78 minutes when Dylan Roberts fired home from the edge of the box to stun Airbus. This is not something they are used to having won their first ten league games of the season and Buckley’s goal seemed to galvanise a response. Airbus could have laid down at this point but to their credit they fought back and two quick fire strikes from Kristian Platt on 85 minutes and Lewis Buckley on 88 minutes saw them take a lead that left Buckley little time to respond to.
Few sides will take Airbus as close as Buckley Town did today and Dan Moore’s sided really should go into the rest of the season fearing no-one in this level. As said previously, there are fine margins between the sides at the top of this league. The only real lesson left for this young Buckley Town side to learn is game management and how to close out a game when they have the lead. Saying that the management team should be really proud of how their young charges performed today, as given their performance, they really did not deserve to lose and everyone who watched the game knew it.
